Assoc. Prof. E. Sare Aydın Yılmaz
Founding President of KADEM

After secondary and high school education in both Germany and Turkey and a BA degree in German Language and Literature in Istanbul University, Yılmaz finished her practical training as an intern in İstanbul Erkek High School. Yılmaz completed her AD and MA at Indianapolis University in the Department of International Relations and her PHD at Yeditepe University in the Department of Political Science and International Relations. Maintaining a long-term board member and a coordinator of EU Research Center of İstanbul Commerce University, Yılmaz now pursues her academic career as a faculty member at Istanbul Commerce University in the Department of Political Science and International Relations and currently serves as a Director of Istanbul Commerce University, Women & Family Research and Implementation Center.

Along with her on-going academic studies on Turkey-EU relations, nationalism and identity politics, Yılmaz has taken part in various national and international projects as a senior programming officer, coordinator and an expert. Yılmaz, as a senior programming officer, managed ‘Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture-Civil society Dialogue’ grant scheme programme which aimed to increase civil society dialogue between EU and Turkey and to promote culture and arts. Yılmaz has also served as a member of Central Decision and Administrative Board (MKYK) of the women’s branch of the Justice and Development Party (AK Party), a board member at different stages AK Party between 2006-2012 and focused on women’s issues. Concentrating particularly on women policies, Yılmaz is currently the founding President of Women and Democracy Association since 2013.

Yılmaz presented the preliminary results of “Problems of Women In The Service Sector and Obstacles In Their Promotion” Project, conducted by KADEM and funded by SIDA and World Bank at the UN Women the fifty-eighth session of the Commission on the Status of Women in New York. Yılmaz is a member of NGO Committee responsible for selecting Turkish candidate representing Turkey in The Council of Europe Grevio Committee and of United Nations W-20 Organization Committee in Turkey.  Yılmaz writes articles and opinion pieces in various periodicals and newspapers on women issues and is a regular writer in Istanbul Chamber of Commerce Weekly Economy Newspaper to support and encourage the participation of women in the business life. Yılmaz is one of the co-authors of the book “Women in Changing Turkey” published in 2014 which includes the field research on women’s socio-cultural, political and economic situation in Turkey and therefore is considered as one of the most comprehensive and experimental studies in this field in the last years.

Additionally to the researches and projects, Yılmaz continues her studies on the issues of women and family, gender justice and conservatism on a national and international scale with the aim of improving the status of women in all areas of life. Yılmaz, the founding president of KADEM, chaired the organization committee of “International Women and Justice Summit” on 24-25 November 2014 and she is one of the co-editors of the summit book which is compiled of the opening remarks, panel presentations and the final declaration of the summit. Her one of the articles “A new Momentum: Gender Justice In The Women’s Movement”, which triggered discussions in academic circles on gender justice in Turkey, was published in Turkish Policy Quarterly. Yılmaz has also presented her most recent article “Women in Economy From The Perspective of Justice in Changing Turkey” in TSV 2023, Development of Civilization Turkey Vision International Congress. Yılmaz’s interviews, articles and opinion pieces have been published in various newspapers and journals such as Star Gazetesi Açık Görüş, Istanbul Chamber of Commerce Weekly Economy Newspaper, TRT World, Reuters, Journal of SGK Vizyon.

Focusing actively on civil society movements, Yılmaz has been among the pioneers of the associations such as Democracy Studies Platform and EU Platform Istanbul. Yılmaz is the opinion leader and the owner of Women and Democracy Association Journal of Women’s Studies in which she published her latest article “Participation of Women in Politics in Turkey Within The Perspective of Gender Equality and Justice”. Yılmaz is also a member of Muslim Women Alliance (MWA), a founding member of EU Platform Istanbul, a board member of Turkish Committee of International Fund for Cooperation and Partnership of the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea and a board member of Turkish Committee of International Council on Alcohol and Addictions (ICCA).

Yılmaz speaks German and English frequently, she is married and is a mother of a daughter named Zehra Mina.
