Gender Justice Congress: Divorce

The 4th Gender Justice Congress, organized by the Women and Democracy Association (KADEM) in collaboration with the Women and Family Research Center of Istanbul Ticaret University, was held on March 8, 2018, in Istanbul under the theme “Divorce.” The congress aimed to examine divorce from a gender justice perspective, addressing its effects on family members, children, and society, as well as its legal, psychological, economic, and health dimensions.

The congress included an opening panel and parallel sessions in three halls, with a total of 36 presentations. Topics covered included the socio-economic dynamics of divorce, divorce in Islamic law, women and the divorce process, effects on children, psychological impacts, and health considerations. Legal procedures before and after divorce,as well as parenting issues, were also discussed with proposed solutions.

The final declaration highlighted that divorce is a significant social phenomenon affecting not only families but also societal order and culture. Factors such as individualization, legal regulations, and changes in cultural and religious values contribute to the increase in divorce rates, emphasizing the importance of preventive measures to protect family institutions and support children’s healthy development.
