5th Gender Justice Congress: Demographic Transformation and Women

The 5th Gender Justice Congress was held on March 7, 2019, under the theme “Demographic Transformation and Women”, hosted by Istanbul University. The congress was organized by KADEM Journal of Women’s Studies in collaboration with Ibn Haldun University, Istanbul University, Istanbul Ticaret University, Fatih Sultan Mehmet Foundation University, Marmara University, SETA Foundation, and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. The opening speeches were delivered by Minister of Family, Labor and Social Services, Zehra Zümrüt Selçuk, the Consul General of Bangladesh in Istanbul Mohammad Monirul Islam, and university rectors.

Approximately 30 academics from different cities in Türkiye presented papers on topics such as marriage and family, women’s employment, aging and care, migration and social policies, and women’s health and childbirth. The sessions enabled interdisciplinary discussions and exchanges of ideas on the social impacts of demographic transformation, as well as on women and family policies. The presented papers shared both their research methods and findings with participants.

At the end of the congress, attention was drawn to demographic changes in Türkiye, with the  aim of contributing to the development of women- and family-centered social policies. Accepted papers were published in the congress proceedings, and the first three selected papers received awards. Free participation enabled broader academic and social interaction, helped reach a wider audience.
