Assoc. Prof. Saliha Okur Gümrükçüoğlu
She was born in Istanbul in 1975. She completed her master’s degree in the Department of Islamic Law at the Faculty of Theology of Marmara University, from which she graduated, with a thesis titled “A Legal Analysis of Reversal Decisions in Cerîde-i İlmiyye.”
She completed her Ph. D. at Marmara University Faculty of Law with her dissertation titled “Ottoman Law and Its Practice in Light of the Complaint Registers.” She earned her associate professorship with the work titled “Adoption and Foster Care in the Ottoman Empire,” which examines various practices related to the care of orphaned children.
She has also conducted research in the areas of the concept of justice in Ottoman law, the systematic structure of the legal system, and the application of law in social life.
She served as the chair of the department and as a faculty member in the Islamic Law Department of the Faculty of Law at Istanbul Medipol University between 2011 and 2014.
Between 2015 and 2024, she served as the head of the Department of Legal History and as a faculty member in the same department at the Faculty of Law, Istanbul Medeniyet University.
Gümrükçüoğlu, who has been involved in social responsibility projects and non-governmental organizations since 2002, served as the Chair of the Board at the Women and Democracy Foundation (KADEM) between 2018 and 2025.
Since 2024, she has continued her academic career in the Department of Legal History at the Faculty of Law, Yalova University.
