Women and Democracy Association which takes women’s status into consideration in national and international levels, attended the 59th meeting of Commission on the Status of Women with leadership of Nesrin Çelik, Under-secretary of Ministry of Family and Social Policies between the dates March 8-20, 2015, in New York.
As part of this session, a panel, in which women’s accessibility to economic opportunities was discussed, as a side event was organized by Turkey. Sarah Nedolast, senior program coordinator of the World Bank, Nesrin Çelik, under-secretary, Ana Maria Munoz Boudet, senior specialist on gender of the World Bank and Sare Aydın Yılmaz, president of KADEM attended to the panel.
At this panel, Sare Aydın Yılmaz, President of KADEM, made a speech and the project “Problems of Women Working in Service Industry and Obstacles in Their Promotion” has been introduced.
This project is financially supported by Swedish International Development Corporation Agency (SIDA) and Ministry of Family and Social Policies. It is going to be sustained for 17 months and the main subject is to determine the difficulties that women working in service industry face and the obstacles preventing their promotion.
Commission on the Status of Women was established in 1946 and is a main establishment in UN which generates policies about gender equality and improvement of women’s rights. Mission of the Commission is recommending and preparing reports about the problems of women in economic, social, political and educational spheres.
Turkey has been attending these meetings from 1990 with a formal delegation which consists of academicians, bureaucrats, NGOs and specialists on women issues. To these formal delegations, minister, deputy minister, under-secretary or head managers who are related to the issue accompany in these meetings.
