Verdict in the Yasemin Uzunçelebi Case
On October 5, 2021, Yasemin Uzunçelebi, the victim, sustained severe injuries when Mehmet Yıldız, who entered her house in Avcılar without notice, poured a chemical substance over her from head to toe. A lawsuit was filed against the defendant, seeking a prison sentence ranging from 13 to 20 years for attempted murder with monstrous intent or causing torture.
According to the report submitted to the Küçükçekmece 2nd Heavy Penal Court in the case, as a result of the attack, Uzunçelebi suffered burns on her face, neck, and scalp, leading to organ loss, with approximately twenty percent of her body surface area burned. It was mentioned that she has become fully dependent on others and is now 95% disabled.
In today’s trial, the defendant was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the attempted murder charge mentioned in the first sentence of the verdict. Although the charge was initially aggravated to life imprisonment due to monstrous intent or causing torture, it was later reduced to 20 years as the attempt did not progress to completion.
As is the case with every incident deeply affecting societal conscience, we stand by the side of the victim of violence, Yasemin Uzunçelebi, in this instance as well.
While the court’s sentence to the defendant Mehmet Yıldız will not restore Yasemin to her former healthy life, it will provide consolation for the belief in justice and for the public conscience.
As KADEM, we hope that such tragic incidents will not happen again. We will continue to fight for the physical and mental integrity, material and spiritual dignity of women in every aspect of life. In this sense, we are always and completely against violence against women, regardless of its source.
Respectfully announced to the public.
